Club History
The Rebel Flying Club Inc. was conceived in late 1989 in a hotel in Metford when two current members, in the sops of schooners of black, mourned the lack of interest by existing local Clubs in sailplanes flying from their fields.
The birth of the Club took place some months later, when in March 1990, the eight original members, Tom Tobin, Darren Kinchington, Brian Kirkwood, Kim Scully, Kevin Ross, Chad Mez, Jack Merrick and Julius Varga met and formulated a name, basic constitution and future proposed direction for the Club.
The Club officially came of age when operations commenced on or, about the 1st July, 1990 and-by the end of twelve months had grown from the original eight members to a membership of about 20. This growth has continued over the years with current membership of over 100 members.
Whilst the original concept was to form a sailplane (glider), club for the Newcastle area, this soon turned to all aspects of radio controlled flying. Original members proved to be very talented and competitive right from the start as the very first visit to another club's fun fly day resulted in Rebel members taking out 1st 2nd and 3rd placing's. Understandably, the host club was not impressed, however the new Rebels were ecstatic. Similar success has continued-through the years and the Club can still boast a number of very talented members.
Of the eight members the club began with, four of those members are still current members, of the other four members. Two have passed away & two have taken on other interests.
